Bill's Fantasy Music Station

Here at WDDB, we're playing what would best be considered Mainstream Rockwith no band garnering more than 4% of the playlist.  And for simplicity's sake, we have just four tiers:

The Top Tier - 4% shares of the playlist
You'll hear these artists every 25 plays, or about once every 2.5 hours.

Aerosmith
Foo Fighters
Metallica
Rush
Queen
YES

The unique thing about this tier of six, is that each group gets their own daily feature at a set time.  KSLX has "Get the Led out," and KUPD has "Mandatory Metallica."  We have Aerosmith at 9am, Foo Fighters at noon, Metallica at 3, Rush at 6, Queen at 9, and YES at midnight.  Each is a block of three deep tracks you won't get anywhere else.

The Middle Tier - 3% shares of the playlist
You'll hear these artists every 33.3 plays, or about once every 3.3 hours

Asia
Alice In Chains
Guns N Roses
The Offspring
Van Halen

The Bottom Tier - 2% shares of the playlist
You'll hear these artists every 50 plays, or about once every 5 hours

Billy Joel
Black Sabbath/Ozzy Osbourne
Boston
The Cars
Creedence Clearwater Revival
Collective Soul
David Bowie
Dire Straits
Dream Theater
Gerry Raferty
Journey
Lynyrd Skynyrd
Megadeth
Motorhead
The Police
Red Hot Chili Peppers
The Scorpions
Stone Temple Pilots
Styx
U2
The Who
ZZ Top

*The Flexible Tier - A combined 12% share of the playlist
You'll hear one of these artists every 8 or 9 plays, or about once every 50 minutes

Listener Requests
AC/DC
Fleetwood Mac/Stevie Nicks
Rolling Stones
Led Zeppelin
The Doors
The Eagles/Joe Walsh

*We play these bands equally, and capped at 2% as well, but they also share their portion with any requests we receive. Obviously, the most requested band will be OAOB, so that might end up the top played act, even more than the top tier.  We honor as many requests as we get, so if we're popular and 10% of our plays are requests, so be it...in that case, these giants share merely the remaining 2% of plays.  Why so little?  Because we know you can go somewhere else to get them in spades, while we're not uniquely passionate about them.  (We don't play Tom Petty, Steve Miller Band, Def Leppard, or Pink Floyd in regular rotation either, for the same reason...but you could also request those if you wanted to.)  This is also the tier that holds all "miscellaneous" plays, such as one-offs like Live (almost any song from Throwing Copper), The Hollies (Long Cool Woman) or Kid Rock.

Now I know what you're thinking.  "That's only 95% of the playlist.  What about the final 5%?"  Well although this may seem narcissistic - hey, it's my station - 5% of a day is almost one hour, and every night from 11pm to midnight, we take a break from music to play the Best of Sports Limelight!

Cardinals Memes

It's time to check back in with the kindest, most gentle, and most knowledgeable fan base in all of sports!

When I think Minions, I think Arizona Cardinals.  You just can't separate the two.  It's always fun to see fictional characters used presumably without permission...not unlike the phenomenon of depicting Calvin peeing on all kinds of logos.

The entire country roots for the Cardinals.  You can't travel to any state without it being Cardinals Country!  (Though Alaska is pictured and Hawaii isn't, so do with that what you will.)  Arizona Cardinals:  The real America's Team.

Well I'm stumped; the logic is air-tight.  Take that, Tom Brady...and also MLB, I guess.

Literally stomp his head and kill him!  At the moment of this screen shot the 49ers have 12,000 points while the Cardinals have none...but that's about to change in a big way.

For being obsessed with the 49ers (their "rival" - along with the Cowboys, Seahawks, Patriots, and Steelers...and heck, the Spurs and Lakers, because why not?), they sure pretend they don't know who the 49ers are a lot.

Remember Jerry Maguire?  Of course you do!  So here is a meme that has no application to the movie and makes no sense.

An accurate depiction of a field goal attempt.

Motivational Posters Don't Always Make Sense

Two instances when the above isn't true:

1) Your excuse-making is enough of a tantrum that it does in fact burn calories - such as stomping and jumping up and down.

2) Your excuse not only burned calories, it was an activity meant to burn calories.  For instance, George Costanza experienced shrinkage, and his excuse was that he was in the pool.  Swimming is an excellent calorie-burning activity.

2014 NFL Over/Under Prediction Results

I did this back in July, and wanted to pay it off.

Had I made these bets, I'd be down 14 hypothetical betting units (having won 43, and lost 57), and breaking it down to its simplest terms, I'd have been correct about 13 teams, and incorrect about 19.  Not a great season of over/under predictions!

In fact, 13-19 is the exact record the New York Giants have played to over the past two seasons.

Here are my predictions from July, pasted below...

Thoughts from the weekend

The Giants' 27-0 loss at the Eagles only reinforces the concept that no small sample size in the NFL should be treated as too much of the overall picture.  For instance, three consecutive wins over lesser competition did not change the fact that the Giants' roster is not good.  For all the criticism Jerry Jones takes in his running of the Cowboys - both fair and unfair - one thing Jones understands that Giants' GM Jerry Reese seems not to, is that you build a team with focus on the offensive line.  The Cowboys' 30-23 win in Seattle, sends the Cowboys to 5-1.  And it reinforces what our friend Dallas said on Sports Limelight two weeks ago:  Investing in the offensive line with early draft picks, pays dividends.  Yes, Reese spent a first round pick on Justin Pugh in 2013, and he's been solid - not terrible, not great, just solid - but it hasn't been nearly enough, and it showed last night as Eli Manning didn't have much of a chance to lead a scoring drive while laying on his back.  Simply put, the Giants' offensive line last night made the Eagles' defense look as good as they were portrayed in that stupid twitter video put out by the Eagles.

Other thoughts...

*The new Budweiser commercial featuring the yellow Labrador is both touching and depressing.  Touching because labs are adorable (and I will admit I am always a sucker for labs), but depressing because it's as if they are saying, "All right, we know you dude-bros aren't going to stop drinking and driving on account of the innocent people you kill with your cars, or on account of your families or friends...so will you at least do it for your dogs?"

*The Bills-Patriots game Sunday was the first ever all-AFC matchup to air on FOX.  Nothing profound to say about that, just found it interesting.

*The air raid siren that the Jets play seemingly after every defensive snap (successful play for the Jets defense or not), sounds awfully loud on TV.  I have an uncle who is a long time season ticket holder for the Jets, and I hope this siren isn't causing him hearing loss.

*I love that Peyton Manning is three touchdown passes away from Brett Favre's career record.  For me, when it comes to the recordbooks, ideally Favre will be left with nothing but "Most career interceptions thrown."  Never forget, he broke the INTs record first; then he played long enough to set the TDs one.

*Mainly from Sunday's action though, I'm just left with sadness in my heart for Victor Cruz, as a person.  The Giants' season is over, but I already knew that, and this team is going nowhere with or without Cruz in 2014.  But to see him lose his season the way he did, just doesn't seem fair.  I realize there are 31 other teams who have players with knee injuries, but following these guys so closely really leads to...what's the term you humans use...empathy?  (I'm not familiar with this concept, but am trying to get better at it.)  And from both a "Giants on the field" perspective, and a "Murphy's Law" perspective, if someone had asked me, what is the worst possible injury that could happen to the Giants, and at what part of the body?", other than Eli Manning's right shoulder, I'd have said Victor Cruz's knee.
